How to track brand mentions on Reddit: prepare the exact names first
Reddit tools match the words you give them, so start with a list. Write down your brand name, product names, your web domain, common misspellings and one or two competitor names. F5Bot's FAQ says its keywords match regardless of capitalization, are matched exactly as entered, and do not support wildcards or regular expressions, so add each spelling as its own keyword. It also says a partial web address can be a keyword if you want to know when your site is submitted.
This guide reads the pages of Reddit, F5Bot and the paid tools as of October 24, 2026.
Step 1: use Reddit search sorted by new, or its feed
- Search each name on Reddit and sort by new. Check the list on a set day each week and write down which threads you want to answer.
- A Reddit search web address that ends search.rss and includes sort=new returned an Atom feed of results when fetched on October 24, 2026. A feed reader can then show new results without you opening the site.
- If you write a script instead of using a feed reader, read Reddit's Data API terms first. They say that using the Data APIs for commercial purposes needs a separate agreement with Reddit.
- A weekly look is enough for a quiet brand. For faster notice of new threads and comments, add email alerts as in step 2.
Step 2: add free email alerts with F5Bot
F5Bot monitors Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters for your keywords and emails you when they appear. Its FAQ says it scans both submissions and comments, checks for new content every few minutes, and sends free-plan alerts after a delay while paid plans can send right away. The same FAQ calls the free tier intended for personal use, so a business should read F5Bot's current plans and terms before relying on it.
The only-subreddit flag limits an alert to chosen subreddits. The FAQ also says F5Bot is designed for fairly uncommon keywords, and a keyword that exceeds its daily alert limit is disabled. A very popular brand name may therefore need a paid tool. F5Bot's guides page presents it as covering what Google Alerts misses on Reddit. That is F5Bot's claim, so run both on the same keyword for a week and compare.
Step 3: test a paid tool before you pay for one
- Brand24 lists Reddit among its sources and collects public posts for your keywords into a dashboard with sentiment and reports. The Brand24 review lists its keyword and mention limits.
- Awario has a Reddit monitoring page that says it scans public subreddits continuously and shows the subreddit, upvote count and thread link for each mention, with Slack or email alerts.
- Syften focuses on communities. Its FAQ says Reddit alerts can arrive by email, Slack, RSS, API or webhook, with a target delay of under one minute.
- These are vendor claims about speed and coverage. Test the same names in a trial and compare against your free alerts before you pay. The small business shortlist shows how each tool counts.
Step 4: reply without hiding who you are
A reply from an account that looks independent, about a business you own or work for, can mislead readers. Say who you are in the first line, for example that you run the company. The FTC's endorsement guides require a clear disclosure of a connection that readers would not expect and that might affect how they weigh a statement, and they list business relationships among material connections. This is general information, not legal advice.
Keep a weekly routine: review new mentions, sort them into praise, questions and complaints, answer the questions, and note recurring complaints for your product or service team.
