Brand monitoring tools for small business: free options first, then what paid tools count

Free brand monitoring options first, then what Brand24, Mention, Awario, BrandMentions and Syften count, and which small business needs a paid tool.

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-24

Quick answerStart free. Google Alerts and Talkwalker Alerts email you when a name appears on the web, F5Bot covers Reddit, and X has its own search. A paid tool earns its fee when you track several names, need shared reports or must catch fast conversations. A local business with one name to watch may not need one.
Brand24 is likely to fit when

✓ Marketing or PR teams and small agencies that want shared dashboards, sentiment and reports across many sources

✓ SaaS teams that track a brand name, product names and several competitors

✓ Readers who have run free alerts for a few weeks and found them too slow or too narrow

✓ Businesses that need alerts across social networks, news, blogs and forums in one place

Important limitations

— Local businesses with one name to watch and a few mentions each month

— Anyone still to try Google Alerts, Talkwalker Alerts or F5Bot

— Teams that want a vendor team to run reputation or crisis response for them

— Founders who only need Reddit or Hacker News alerts

Brand monitoring tools for small business: start with free alerts

A brand monitoring tool tells you when people mention your business online. For one business name, free tools do most of that job. A paid tool adds dashboards, sentiment, reports, more sources and speed, and its fee is hard to justify until you need those. Every tool below was read from its own pages and help articles as of October 24, 2026, and plan amounts stay on each vendor's live page.

Free options first

  • Google Alerts: its form offers sources such as news, blogs, web, video, books and discussions, delivery as it happens or at most once a day or week, and a choice of only the best results or all results.
  • Talkwalker Alerts: free, and the alerts go to any email address, an RSS feed or Slack. It lists news, X, blogs and discussion forums, 22 languages and Boolean operators for narrowing results.
  • F5Bot: a free tier for Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters keyword alerts by email. Its FAQ calls the free tier intended for personal use and says the tool is designed for fairly uncommon keywords, not very popular brands.
  • X advanced search: searches posts by words, exact phrases, accounts, mentions of an account, places and dates, and is available when you are logged in.
  • Reddit search: sort by new and check it on a schedule. The Reddit guide covers the steps.

Paid tools compared by what they count

  • Brand24: plans count keywords (3 to 25, then custom), monthly mentions and users. It offers a 14-day trial with no card required. See the Brand24 review.
  • Mention: owned by Agorapulse, it names review monitoring across 75 plus sites and offers a free trial and a demo. See Brand24 vs Mention.
  • Awario: plans count topics (3, 15 or 100), each holding unlimited keywords, plus new mentions a month. Its trial uses the Starter plan with no card.
  • BrandMentions: plans count keywords, monthly mentions, users and update frequency, from daily to realtime, with a 7-day free trial.
  • Syften: focused on communities such as Reddit, Hacker News, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, forums and YouTube. Plans count filters, results a day and archive length, with a 14-day trial and no card. Its FAQ says it does not monitor LinkedIn.
  • Do not compare mention allowances across tools directly. Each vendor defines and collects mentions its own way, so test the same names in two trials.

Which reader needs a paid tool

  • Local business: one business name, perhaps a few locations. Free alerts plus a weekly look at Reddit and X cover it. Pay only if you need reports for a team or an owner.
  • SaaS founder: a product name, competitors and phrases such as alternatives to your product. Start with F5Bot and Talkwalker Alerts, then trial Syften or Awario if community threads matter most, or Brand24 or Mention if you want a dashboard.
  • Small agency: many client names. Keyword and topic counts become the limit, so compare how Brand24, Awario and Syften count before you pick. Awario counts team members by plan (1, 10 or unlimited), and Syften says agencies can tag filters per client.

A one-week test before you pay

Set up free alerts on your brand name, product name and one competitor. After a week, count the mentions and note which ones mattered. Then start one trial on the same names and see what the paid tool found that the free alerts missed, and how many keywords or topics it used. If the paid tool found little that you acted on, stay free. The Brand24 pricing guide shows a keyword and mention sizing check you can reuse for any tool.

How to weigh the lists you will find

Some roundups and alternatives pages, including the one on Brand24's own site, are written by monitoring vendors. Treat a ranking as the author's view and check plan limits on each vendor's own page. Vendor claims about sources, speed and customer counts are their own, in line with the FTC's endorsement guides.

The evidence behind this buying guidance

This guide draws on Google Alerts, Talkwalker Alerts page, F5Bot home page, F5Bot FAQ. Merchant-controlled records describe the provider’s own capabilities, terms or standards; they do not independently validate those claims. Other cited records provide additional context. A different publisher or a research, regulatory or certification label does not by itself establish independence, relevance or product validation.
